Breaking News: Aspirin and Macular Degeneration

January 22, 2013

Many patients take aspirin regularly for a number of reasons. However, just this week a major study showed that regular aspirin use significantly increases the risk of macular degeneration. These results remind us that it is important to have a regular, yearly eye exam as our understanding of general health and eye conditions is constantly changing and improving. Most importantly, call the office and schedule an exam and consultation with Dr. Mitchell to discuss this issue in your own case. Now would be a great time to come in, go over your medications and have our new retinal imaging done so that we can detect any early changes. In addition, this is something that you need to discuss with your primary care doctor as well. Please call today if you are at risk for macular degeneration and are regularly taking aspirin.
